The Ministry of Communications (MinCom), through the Land Transport Department (LTD), is currently embarking on initiatives to create a public transport system that is regulated, efficient, reliable, well connected, “People-Centric”, safe and sustainable. This project is targeted to be implemented by the 3rd Quarter of this year for taxis and by mid-2017 for buses.
The whole project involves the Ministry reviewing its policies on the provision of public transport services in Brunei Darussalam and identifying the arising weaknesses of the current public transport system. Towards implementation of this project, the Ministry is therefore revamping the existing systems and introducing significant initiatives that represent major milestones within the overall implementation plan prepared. To improve the connectivity and accessibility of public buses, the Ministry, through LTD, has revamped the nationwide bus route network from the existing 29 routes to 42 main bus routes which comprises 28 main bus routes in the Brunei-Muara District, 5 in the KB-Seria area, 2 in Tutong, 2 in the Temburong district and 5 Inter-district routes. To further increase connectivity and accessibility, 21 feeder bus services for residential areas will also be introduced. One of the key components to the government-intervention-related approach is to ensure the best model(s) that suits Brunei current resources and scenario for the efficiency and sustainability of the new public transport system. To realize operations for these routings, the Ministry thorugh LTD is inviting interested parties to participate in the EOI (Expression of Interest) for the provision of bus services for the selected 17 main bus routes within the Brunei-Muara district. Interested parties may also propose their intentions to operate other routes with the best model that suits the public’s needs and other requirements as stated in the EOI document. The EOI is opened to local companies / cooperatives or international organizations with vast experience in public transport services to provide bus services that are reliable and efficient for Brunei Darussalam.
