Launching of Maritime Competency Framework

Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha launched the Maritime Competency Framework at Dewan Al-Fath, MPABD headquarters.

The event was organised by Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD) and Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC), with the support of Manpower Planning Employment Council (MPEC), Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) and Brunei Maritime Academy (BMA).

BGC, MPABD and along with International Maritime Organization (IMO), commemorates The Day of the Seafarer (DOTS) annually on the 25th of June. The DOTS aims to recognize the invaluable contribution seafarers make to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal cost to themselves and their families. This year’s Day of the Seafarer, themed ‘Your voyage-then and now, share your journey’, aims to celebrate and recognize seafarers’ experience and their journey then and now.

Chief Executive of MPABD, Captain Abdul Mateen Abdurrahman Liew @ Martin, pointed out that there has been significant progress made in the maritime sector on competency building, standardisation of frameworks, and employment opportunities for seafarers and other supporting roles in maritime.

In support of maritime talent development, the Maritime Competency Framework, which serves as a guide for the development of maritime talent in Brunei Darussalam, with the objective of standardising the requirements and competencies for the maritime industry of Brunei Darussalam. The competency framework also ensures that Bruneian Seafarers are recognised globally, based on formally adopted international requirements, including certifications, and training standards, including the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) standard, which is one of the 4 pillars of Maritime Law.
