Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, Brunei Darussalam Attended Asia Tech X Summit 2023 in Singapore

Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, attended a Government to Government (G2G) Roundtable on Scams and Artificial Intelligence (AI) that was held alongside Asia Tech x Singapore (ATxSG) which was held from 6th June to 9th June 2023. The ATxSG was opened by His Excellency Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Republic of Singapore. The Ministerial Roundtable was chaired by Her Excellency Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information, Republic of Singapore.

During the session, the Ministers exchanged views and information on the common growing trend of online scams and the various counter measures introduced by respective countries. Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary who is also Chairman of the National Cyber Security Committee shared that 90% of the reported cases of scams and fraud in 2022 were conducted via online means. When compared with 2018 data, less than 40% of reported scams and fraud cases were via online means. The learning and experience of others from the roundtable discussions will help shape the additional measures that need to be introduced to mitigate the occurrence of online scams. Clearly a concerted effort by security agencies, telecommunications service providers, banks and enforcement agencies will be required.​

On Artificial Intelligence (AI) and especially Generative AI, Ministers acknowledged the efforts at national and some regional levels on regulating Artificial Intelligence. It was recognized that there are many useful applications of Artificial Intelligence and the right balance between promoting innovation and protecting the public interest is required. In this regard, there were calls for more international collaboration at ensuring the technology’s development and deployment is align with responsible and ethical practices.

At the sideline of Asia Tech x Singapore, Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary made a courtesy call on his counterpart Her Excellency Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information, Singapore on 6th June 2023. Both Ministers exchanged views on current regional developments and key challenges, as well as areas of mutual interests to strengthen the bilateral relations between both countries.

​Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary also visited the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) for in-depth discussion on cybersecurity trends and development. The program continued with a discussion with the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO) to explore on the alignments and learning points from Singapore’s digitalization journey. Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary also visited IMDA PIXEL Innovation Lab, an innovation space in Singapore for corporates and start-ups to learn about latest technology and ideate, experiment, and build user-centric digital products.

​Also joining Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary for the Asia Tech x Singapore were Yang Mulia Ir. Mohammad Nazri Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC),  Yang Mulia Shamsul Bahri bin Hj Kamis, the Interim Commissioner of Cyber Security Brunei (CSB), Yang Mulia Ir. Haji Jailani bin Haji Buntar, Chief Executive of the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) as well as senior officers from both the Ministry and AITI.
