Tuesday, 13th July 2021 - Yang Berhormat Minister of Transport and Infocommunications participated in the Asia Tech x Summit (ATxSummit) via video conferencing


Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, Brunei Darussalam attended the Asia Tech x Summit (ATxSummit) held on 13th July 2021 via video conferencing.

With the theme "Redefining Tech for a Better Future", ATxSummit was officiated by His Excellency Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, Singapore. In his opening remarks, the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore shared on the impact of COVID - 19 to the global economy and how it has accelerated digital transformation in all sectors. His Excellency also launched the Singapore Trade Data Exchange (SGTraDex) as an initiative to encourage trusted sharing of data.

During the ATxSummit, Yang Berhormat Minister of Transport and Infocommunications participated in a live interactive session with Her Excellency Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information, Singapore.  The session which carried the theme "Digital Transformation in ASEAN - Opportunities in the New Normal", was moderated by Mr Martin Soong of CNBC.

In the live interactive session, Yang Berhormat Minister of Transport and Infocommunications shared on how digital transformation in ASEAN is guided by the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025.  To strengthen the region's preparedness for digital transformation, policy and regulatory approaches would need to include technology neutrality, economic, social and security factors.  In addition, technology related challenges such as digital divide, affordability, enabling infrastructures and legislations are among the important considerations needed to create a win-win situation for the Government, industry and the society in ASEAN.  

Yang Berhormat Minister of Transport and Infocommunications also emphasised on the importance of inclusivity which entails for the need on equipping youths with the necessary digital skills in improving their employment opportunities.  Also emphasised was the need to also be mindful of the requirements for other members of the society to ensure that no one is left behind in digital transformation. 

At the sidelines of the ATxSummit, Yang Berhormat Minister of Transport and Infocommunications also held a virtual bilateral meeting with his counterpart, HE Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information, Singapore. Both Ministers discussed on initiatives to strengthen bilateral relations in the field of digital economy, cybersecurity, digital government and emerging technologies.

Joining Yang Berhormat Minister of Transport and Infocommunications at the virtual event were  Yang Mulia Awang Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), Yang Mulia Awang Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications) MTIC, Yang Mulia Awang Shamsul Bahri bin Haji Kamis, Interim Commissioner of Cyber Security Brunei (CSB), Yang Mulia Haji Jailani bin Haji Buntar, Acting Chief Executive of Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI) and senior officials from MTIC, AITI and CSB.

The ATxSummit is held during the  Asia Tech X Singapore (ATxSG) which is a technology event featuring conferences for governments, global enterprises and communities discussing the role of technology in interacting with society and the digital economy.  ATxSG is organised by Infocomm Media Development Authority  of Singapore, (IMDA) and Informa Tech, and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
