Tuesday, 20th August 2019, Bandar Seri Begawan – The Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications and Brunei Darussalam National Road Safety Council (MKKJR) held a High-Level Policy Dialogue with stakeholders on cycling safety in Brunei Darussalam at the Centrepoint Hotel, Gadong.

The Dialogue was attended by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications as the Chairman of MKKJR, Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, Deputy Minister of Development as the Deputy Chairman of MKKJR, Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Iswandy bin Ahmad, Member of the Legislative Council as Ambassador of MKKJR, Permanent Secretaries, Deputy Permanent Secretaries, Department Heads and Senior Officials from various relevant Ministries and agencies, Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation as well as private stakeholders.

The main objective of this Dialogue was to foster discussion among a diverse group of multi-stakeholder policy makers and private cycling entities towards addressing gaps and challenges related to cycling safety in the country. The Dialogue invited Ms. Jo Yee Yung Fung, an expert from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) who has been involved in the planning of FIFA 2022 Qatar Transportation Plan, 2010 Winter Olympics Transportation Plan and the Vancouver Public Bike Share Scheme.

The Dialogue came at a juncture where there has been a growing concern on cycling safety on the roads and highways. To this end, a cycling poll was conducted recently whereby the results also helped to identify ways forward to improve cycling policies, regulations and initiatives.
