ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 11-13 August 2025

1. The Brunei Darussalam delegation to ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025, held from 11 to 13 August 2025 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Kuala Lumpur, was led by Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications.

2. Held under the theme “Driving Sustainable and Inclusive AI Development in ASEAN”, the Summit was officiated by Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia. The event brought together government leaders, industry experts, researchers, and innovators from across the ASEAN and beyond to explore opportunities, address challenges, and establish collaborative pathways for advancing artificial intelligence (AI) in support of sustainable economic growth, social inclusivity, and technological resilience.

3. During the Summit, Yang Berhormat participated in the Ministerial Panel Discussion on “From Policy to Practice: Collaborating for a Secure and Governed AI Ecosystem in ASEAN”, which focused on harmonising policies, ensuring responsible AI governance, and fostering regional cooperation. Discussions underscored the importance of developing ASEAN-wide standards, balancing national priorities with regional coordination, and identifying common ground to advance shared objectives.



4. Yang Berhormat also took part in the ‘Ministerial Roundtable titled “Towards a United ASEAN Approach to Responsible AI and Digital Trust”, chaired by the Yang Berhormat Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital, Malaysia. The dialogue reflected a clear convergence on a human-centric, risk-aware approach to AI that safeguards innovation, builds public trusts, and enables cross-border data flows. Key ASEAN instruments, including the ASEAN Guide on AI Governance and Ethics, the Responsible AI Roadmap, and ongoing work towards an ASEAN AI Safety Network, were highlighted as essential to fostering regional coherence. These align closely with Brunei Darussalam’s own priorities in ensuring safe and ethical AI development.



5. On the sidelines of the Summit, Yang Berhormat held a bilaterial meeting with His Excellency Chea Vandeth, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications of Cambodia, where discussions covered potential areas of cooperation in digital transformation and cybersecurity. Yang Berhormat also met with Mr. Khailee Ng, Managing Partner & Board Member, 500 Global, to explore opportunities for collaboration in technology innovation and investment.



6. The Summit’s key themes reaffirm Brunei Darussalam’s commitment to ethical AI development through the Digital Brunei Transformation Plan (DBTP), led by Digital Brunei Council. The DBTP serves as a guiding framework for the nation’s digital transformation journey towards achieving Wawasan Brunei 2035.



7. Accompanying Yang Berhormat were Yang Mulia Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), along with senior officers from the Ministry.
