The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD), under the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), held the Launching Ceremony of the Brunei Darussalam Climate Book in conjunction with the World Meteorological Day 2026 celebration at Dewan Amar Pahlawan, Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications Building.
The World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on 23rd March to commemorate the enforcement of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) convention in 1950. The World Meteorological day is also celebrated in recognition of the important contributions made by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in ensuring the safety and well-being of communities around the world. This year, the World Meteorological Day is being celebrated with the chosen theme ‘Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow’.
The Guest of Honour at the ceremony was Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Yang Mulia Awang Mohammad Aisamuddin @ Aliomar bin Alias, Imam of Masjid Sufri Bolkiah Perpindahan Berakas, and followed by a welcoming speech by Yang Mulia Dayang Rokiah binti Haji Angas, Acting Director of Meteorology, as Chairperson of the event.
The ceremony then continued with the launch of the Brunei Darussalam Climate Book by the Minster of Transport and Infocommunications, followed by the presentation of the book to representatives of relevant agencies from National Disaster Management Centre, Ministry of Education, Public Works Department and Brunei Climate Change Office.
The Brunei Darussalam Climate Book outlines the country’s weather patterns and climate characteristics, including seasonal variations and the key factors influencing the climate, while also highlighting observed climate change trends in the country, through simple and easy-to-understand visual illustrations. The publication is expected to enhance climate literacy among the public and serve as a useful reference to support more effective planning and decision-making.
The ceremony also marked the release of BDMD’s new Strategic Plan book for the five-year period, from 2026 to 2030, known as Meteorology 2030, which serves as a strategic roadmap for the department in strengthening the country’s meteorological and climate services to be more resilient, innovative, and impactful.
Also present during the event were Yang Mulia Ir. Awang Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary, Yang Mulia Awang Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications), Yang Mulia Awang Ridzuan bin Haji Ahmad, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Transport), Chief Executives, Heads of Departments, Directors, senior officers, officers and staff members of the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications as well as its departments and agencies of the authority under it.
