Thursday, 22 May 2025 - Bilateral Meeting of Minister of Transport and Infocommunications of Brunei Darussalam and Secretary-General of The International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
1. On 20 May 2025, Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications of Brunei Darussalam, held a bilateral meeting with Her Excellency Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at their headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2025 Annual Session of the United Nation Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) Advisory Board, which was attended by Yang Berhormat Minister in his capacity as a member of the UNRSF Advisory Board representing the Asia-Pacific region.


2. Yang Berhormat Minister congratulated ITU on their recent 160th anniversary and acknowledged the work of the ITU in helping its member states including Brunei Darussalam assess the development of the information and communication technology sector (ICT) through the ICT Development Index (IDI). Brunei Darussalam achieved a score of 95.7 in 2024, representing an increase from 2023's score of 94.8. This mirror’s Brunei Darussalam’s ongoing efforts to support the growth of Brunei Darussalam’s digital economy.


3. The discussion with the Secretary-General also focused on deepening digital cooperation and driving innovation, with emphasis on key areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital inclusion, and capacity-building. Both parties exchanged views and explored strategic opportunities for collaboration to strengthen Brunei Darussalam’s digital transformation agenda through ITU-led initiatives and strategic work. 

4. Also in attendance were Her Excellency Dk Mazlizah binti Pengiran Haji Mahalee, Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva; Yang Mulia Haji Mohammad Salihin bin Haji Aspar, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Transport) at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC); along with senior officials from the Ministry.
