MESSAGE BY THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT AND
INFOCOMMUNICATIONS / MARITIME AND PORT AUTHORITY OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
(MPABD) CHAIRMAN ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD MARITIME DAY 2022
THEME: NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR GREENER SHIPPING
1.
The form of threats in the ocean is not only focused on safety, but
also subject to the issue of marine pollution and unsustainable
exploitation of marine resources. Marine environmental issues are
increasingly challenging given that the physical nature of the ocean
itself has no physical boundary.
2.
This year’s World Maritime Day which carries the theme "New
Technologies for Greener Shipping" aims to highlight initiatives to
address some of the most pressing ocean and environmental concerns,
including climate change, marine pollution, and preserving biodiversity.
It reflects the importance of supporting the green transition in the
maritime sector to develop a sustainable future, without leaving anyone
behind.
3.
Brunei Darussalam’s climate change ten (10) key strategies to shape the
nation to a low carbon and climate-resilient economy, set the tone for
the shipping sector to meet international targets established by the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 Agenda.
4.
These goals are supported by the International Maritime Organization
(IMO) through its work in decarbonization, circular economy, and
rethinking plastics. At the regional level, ASEAN Maritime Transport is
actively working with one another as well as partnering with leading
organizations and dialogue partners such as Japan, Republic of Korea,
and the European Union, to promote innovation and green technology in
the region.
5.
It is our aspiration for Brunei Darussalam to maintain a shipping
industry that is safe, secure, sustainable and resilient whilst also
pursuing growth. With that in mind, I urge that we and the industry
players to continuously keep ourselves abreast with industry
developments, adapt and position ourselves to be future ready.
